Overheard in Speech Therapy: Using ASL for children who are unable to communicate effectively through spoken language.

Simple words and phrases in American Sign Language (ASL) are commonly used by speech-language pathologists (SLPs) to bridge the communication gap for children with delayed spoken language skills who are unable to effectively communicate with words out loud.

Additionally, the use of ASL is shown to reduce frustration and negative behaviors both in therapy and at home due to providing children with a means to communicate their wants and needs. Many SLPs even report that using signs accelerates spoken language skills, and causes children to become verbally responsive sooner than those who don’t use ASL in therapy.

“I have found American Sign Language to be a powerful tool of language expression for those with communication deficit and delay. Parents also love how American Sign Language allows them to connect more deeply with their children, as well as ease potentially difficult transitions,” said Steve Sjoblom, a pediatric speech-language pathologist with RSI.
