Overheard in Occupational Therapy: Playing Pretend Using Our Imagination

Using their imagination allows a child to explore their problem-solving skills. Whether they’re building a space ship, exploring Antarctica, or practicing their doctor skills–encouraging a child to use their imagination during occupational therapy is a common and very effective tool many of the RSI therapists use.

For example, delegating which job each players has, or deciding how to compromise when others have different ideas when building a skyscraper are valuable social skills. As the game continues, the builders will learn to sequence their steps and create a plan to execute their ideas. Win-win-win!
