Some signs that a child may benefit from occupational therapy are easy to spot. Others can be surprisingly easy to miss.

Pediatric occupational therapy can support children in many areas of everyday life, from fine motor skills and coordination to sensory processing, emotional regulation, self-care, and independence.

Some signs that may indicate a child could benefit from an occupational therapy evaluation include:

  • Fine motor difficulties: Trouble using scissors, crayons or pencils; difficulty with buttons, zippers, or fasteners; or tiring quickly during coloring and writing tasks.
  • Sensory processing challenges: Strong reactions to sounds, textures, clothing, movement, or other sensory experiences, or frequently seeking additional movement or sensory input.
  • Self-care difficulties: Needing more help than expected with dressing, feeding, grooming, toileting, or other daily routines.
  • Emotional regulation challenges: Becoming easily overwhelmed or frustrated, having difficulty calming down, or struggling when routines or expectations change.
  • Coordination and motor planning difficulties: Trouble learning new movements, participating in playground or sports activities, navigating obstacles, or completing tasks that require several movements in sequence.
  • Difficulty participating independently: Everyday activities at home, school, or in the community may require more assistance or cause more frustration than expected.

Having difficulty in one of these areas does not automatically mean a child needs occupational therapy. Children develop at different rates, and an occupational therapist can help determine whether a child’s challenges are affecting their ability to participate successfully in everyday activities.

Early support can help children build confidence, independence, and skills they can use at home, at school, and in the community.
