Overheard in Occupational Therapy: Conversational Mirroring

“What was your favorite thing you got for Christmas?”

It’s likely that your child will be asked this question at least once by a loved one, a teacher, a coach or a friend–but after answering the question what can they do in return to add to the conversation?

Mirror the question and ask it back!

“Mirroring in a conversation is an easy way to teach your child to become involved in and add to a conversation without a lot of pressure put on them to come up with something unique to say,” said Jeannie Poole one of the occupational therapists at the Rexburg Pediatric Clinic. “When it’s appropriate, all you have to do is politely ask the person the same question they asked you and the conversation will continue.”
