With most of our local kids are starting school this week, the RSI occupational therapists would like to point out that back-to-school time is a great opportunity to get your children back into a schedule and daily routine!
“A schedule provides predictability so that children know the expectations for what is going to happen. This helps establish routines for independent living skills,” said Tammy Conrad, an RSI Occupational Therapist. “A schedule also helps with self-regulation. For example, if a child has sensory processing issues and they know what their routine is, this will help with their expectations and coping with the resulting sensory inputs.”

“Children often fear the unknown – whether it’s the broccoli on their plate – or a big life change like moving to a different house or gaining a new sibling.
While change is a learning opportunity, it can also be stressful for children. A normal routine brings comfort and consistency to a child’s life.”
Daily routines might include:
- The time to get ready in the morning
- Bath times, mealtimes, naptimes and bedtimes
- Housework, cooking and cleaning schedules
- Play time, family time and outdoor play
