Ask an RSI Expert

Today’s question is answered by Anna Ripley, PT, DPT–an RSI physical therapist based primarily in our Rexburg Pediatric Clinic.

Question: My 4-year-old daughter walks on her toes. Is it a big deal? Should I be worried?

Answer: “There are several reasons for toe walking. One can be because of tightened gastrocnemius and soleus muscles (aka calf muscles). The other common reason is due to sensory related issues.

If the reason for the toe walking is due to physical structure and tight muscles, physical therapy is definitely needed, don’t delay.

If the reason for the toe walking is due to a sensory deficit, the child will usually grow out of the habit (though prolonged toe walking can eventually lead to tightened calf muscles which–see above–will require physical therapy).

If your child is a toe walker over the age of 3 it’s best to schedule an appointment to make sure there are no underlying physical concerns.”
