Welcome to our new social media series: “Ask an RSI Expert”

We’ve got a whole employee roster full of kind and knowledgeable therapists–why not have them help us answer some common parent questions? Thank you to Karen Thomas, one of our awesome Speech-Language Pathologists who sees kids at the Rexburg Pediatric Clinic, for taking on our first question.

Question: I have a hard time understanding what my 3 year old says when he’s speaking to me. Will he grow out of it? At what age should a child begin speech therapy?

Answer: “It’s never too early to begin speech therapy. Yes, there is a chance he could grow out of it, but why wait? As a general guideline at the age of 3, a child’s speech should be understood by parents 75-100% of the time. By the age of 4, a child’s speech should be understandable 75-100% of the time by unfamiliar listeners. Early intervention is available for a reason: it has proven to improve outcomes for children at risk.”

Send us a message if you have a question you’d like to have answered! Or give us a call if you’d like to schedule an evaluation or free screening with any of our therapists!
